I spend most of my day sitting in front of a computer. So, to combat the lumpish feeling that can bring, in the morning when I have seen my darling child on to her bus for school, I walk. I usually go about 3-5 Km depending on my mood, I try not to let the weather dictate my walk, but with the polar vortex I had to cut it short a few times.
This morning was special. The huge snowstorm yesterday dumped piles and piles of snow on the ground. This morning though the sun is blazing strong in the sky and the pristine snow is sparkling like millions of diamonds strewn about on the ground, beautiful sight. There go I, ploughing my way through thigh deep powdery drifts and well shoveled sidewalks alternately making my way to the boat launch just around the corner form my home, using a rather circuitous route so I am sure to get at least some exercise, I come upon a lovely site. The river is fully frozen with just a sliver of sparkling fresh water slipping between the snowdrifts on the surface in the centre and as the sun hits the snow there is this most diaphanous mist floating gently from the surface of the snow and making the air shimmer, so lovely. I regretted the decision to leave my camera at home this morning (I didn’t want to get it wet). So I made my way quickly home so I could capture the moment in writing. When I cam in the door, my eyelashes were frozen with droplets of condensation from my breath and my scarf was stiff from the same. So now I sit with my tea and toast warm and snuggly in my home letting the image play in my mind and dreaming of the times in the Spring and Fall when I can rest at the end of my morning walk on the park bench and watch the birds and fish play in the same river.
